If you have experienced a dental emergency, such as a badly bitten tongue or lip, a broken tooth, a chipped tooth, or a tooth that has been knocked loose or knocked out completely, please call our office immediately at (512) 271-5884. Seeking the help of a skilled family dentist as soon as possible can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
The Tomasik Family Dental team encourages you to stay calm, call our office, and, in the meantime, follow a few basic steps to help ensure a successful recovery from your emergency:
Bitten lip or tongue: Gently rinse your mouth with warm water and apply pressure with a clean cloth to stop the bleeding. Apply a cloth-wrapped ice pack to reduce swelling. If the bite will not stop bleeding, seek emergency medical care.
Broken tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and apply an icepack to reduce swelling. Your dentist cannot reattach the piece that has broken off, but he can suggest restorative options such as bonding or crown placement to return it full function.
Knocked a tooth loose: Rinse with warm water. Push the tooth back into its correct position and then bite down gently but firmly. Your dentist may want to anchor your loose tooth into place using a splint.
Knocked a tooth out: Rinse your mouth to clean area. Stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the site with a clean cloth. Recover the tooth and, holding it by the crown, rinse it with warm water. Do not remove any connective tissue that may still be attached. Store the tooth in a clean jar of milk or in your mouth, between the check and gum, until you can see your dentist.
